Birda Smith Lecroy

November 24, 1933 — September 5, 2024

Birda Mae LeCroy passed peacefully into her heavenly home on September 5, 2024. She is survived by her son, Jay LeCroy (Nelda) a sister, Mattie Lou Wells, a brother- Rev. Ethridge Smith, three grandsons, Stephen Huddleston (Kate), Adam Huddleston(wife Jordan and a great grandson Bev), C.J.LeCroy, and a host of nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Born November 24, 1933 in Perry County, Alabama, Birda Mae (Smith)LeCroy lived to be 90 years old. She was one of 13 children who knew the hard work of a farm and running a mill. She loved to read. Her affection for books and learning turned to a passion for reading and, later, teaching. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Montevallo when it was still a women’s college for teaching. She taught for a few years before she met the love of her life, Mr. Alton LeCroy, whom she married in her mid- twenties. They settled in Isabella and endured some heartbreaking infant losses before finally welcoming Jay into the family. She continued teaching in Dallas County until she completed her Master’s Degree in Library Science from UAB. Then she moved to Isabella where she was the librarian until her retirement in 1998.

She and Alton enjoyed years of camping, little league baseball, football, hosting pool parties, and being involved in the community and Mulberry with different ministries-especially working in the nursery, the library, and participating in Forever Young. She loved her family and she was generous, tenderhearted, and well-loved in return.

Her Celebration of Life service will be at Mulberry Baptist Church on Saturday, September 14 2024 at 11:00AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mulberry Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
