The following December he married his high school sweetheart Eloise Strickland. He served in the US Navy from 1951-1953 during the Korean War as a SKSN, Seaman Storekeeper Striker, on the USS Abbot DD 629 destroyer in the Mediterranean. After his service, he worked for the Colonial Bread Company for 11.5 yrs in Selma and Montgomery. During that time children came along in 1954 and 1956. In 1960, the family moved back to his beloved hometown of Billingsley. In July of that year, he was employed with Liberty National Life Insurance Company out of the Clanton office for more than 30 years. During this time, he was an active member of the Billingsley Baptist Church in which he served as director, teacher, and committee member of various duties in the church. The longest duties that he thoroughly enjoyed and his purpose in life was teaching the men’s Sunday School class and diligent visitation on Sunday afternoons after church delivering sermon tapes and witnessing to people in his beloved community of Billingsley. He was also active in the community as a little league baseball coach , Central AL Feeder Pig Association Director, and he was a member of the Freemasons of the Billingsley Masonic Lodge. In 1970, he served on the Autauga County Board of Education as a Democratic nomination member. In his later years, he was a staunch Republican and served as Mayor of Billingsley from 1986-1987. In 1981 after almost 34 yrs, his first marriage resolved. In 1983, he married Lanelle Bearden Derringer and started a new chapter of love, life in the community, and family for 22 yrs until her death in May of 2005. Some of daddy’s favorite and most loved things in life was he was a die hard Auburn fan (War Eagle) and loved sports, college football especially. His favorite sports resource was the Birmingham News sports section. Unfortunately and to his great disappointment, he outlived the physical delivery in his area of the paper product. He loved taking care of his much loved pet cows on his beloved farm, he loved living in his own home in his adored community of Billingsley, and he loved his church and duties of teaching and visitation. His Purpose in Life was his faith in Jesus Christ as a Christian, serving his beloved community of Billingsley, and his patriotism to his country. Please join us in celebrating his life of 91 yrs on Saturday, August 28th , 12 noon visitation, 1 pm Celebration of Life memorial service
