A graveside service for Elizabeth Nell Rockett Powers, 98, of Clanton, will be Thursday, December 17, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Clanton City Cemetery with Rev. Matt DeBord officiating. Martin Funeral Home directing.
Powers, affectionately known to many as “Mama Nell”, was born in Coopers, Alabama on December 29, 1921, the daughter of the late John Dewey Rockett and Bertie Robinson Rockett. She died on December 14 at The Oaks on Parkwood Nursing Home.
Powers attended Ward-Belmont College, Nashville, TN and was a graduate of the University of Alabama with a degree in English and was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority.
Powers served many years as church secretary for Clanton First Baptist Church and many years as a Sunday School teacher for the “Friendly” class. She was a member of The Study Club of Clanton and loved baseball, especially the Atlanta Braves.
Surviving relatives include her three sons, Bob (Sidney) Powers of Gadsden, Tom (Renee`) Powers of Clanton and Jim (Anne) Powers of Hoover; six grandchildren, Taylor (Jennifer) Powers, Carter (Robbie) Pine, Sam (Alicia) Powers, Russ (Melissa) Powers, Robert Powers and Michael Powers; six great grandchildren Sidney, Lily, Logan, Summer, Cole and Luke. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years Robert W. “Bob” Powers, her sister Lois Maddox and brother-in-law Billy Maddox, and her parents.
