Ernest W. Baker Obituary Ernest William Baker, age 82, of Auburn, Alabama passed away on May 6th following an extended illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Henry Baker and Henretta DeBruhl Baker. He is survived by his wife, Mary Merchant Baker, their son William Steven Baker and his wife Kimberly Baker. He had three grandsons; Matthew Baker of Denver, CO, Gregory Baker of Blacksburg, VA and Tyler Baker of Athens, GA. He was a native of Camden, South Carolina. While attending school there he was very active in sports. He was named an All-State football player and participated in the North Carolina - South Carolina Shrine Bowl. Ernest attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University) where in 1953 he earned a B.S. in Business. While a student, he was a pitcher on the baseball team and a member of the football team. Following graduation he served in the United States Army in the Military Personnel Division; Fort Jackson, South Carolina. For 36 years he was employed by General Motors Acceptance Corporation, the finance branch of GM. He retired as the Manager of the Fort Smith, Arkansas office which served many automobile dealers in that area. During retirement Ernest has enjoyed attending sports events, growing plants and flowers and having his grandsons for summer visits. Ernest was a member of the Auburn United Methodist Church and the Joel McDavid Sunday School Class. We wish to thank the church personnel and members for their kindness and attention during his illness. Plans will be arranged later. The family expresses their sincere appreciation to Hospice Advantage and everyone at Bethany House for their excellent care and loving support for the patient and family.
