Obituary

Gene Autry Sorrell, a devoted family man, respected community leader, and dedicated professional, passed away on May 12, 2026. Born on January 18, 1943, Gene's life was marked by unwavering commitment to his family, his faith, and his work.

Gene graduated with a bachelor's degree in business from the University of Montevallo, laying the foundation for a distinguished career in insurance. For 32 years, he served State Farm Insurance with dedication and expertise, retiring as a fire and casualty superintendent. His knowledge and leadership extended beyond his professional role, as he also served on the board of equalization with the tax assessor’s office, contributing to the community’s governance and fiscal responsibilities.

A loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Gene cherished his family above all else. He was known for his warmth, generosity, and steadfast support. His passion extended into sports, where he enjoyed playing softball and generously shared his time and skills by coaching several women’s softball and travel ball teams. Gene was a passionate supporter of Auburn sports, particularly the softball team, always cheering them on with heartfelt enthusiasm.

His faith was a cornerstone of his life. Gene faithfully served as a deacon at both West End Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Clanton, where he was honored as a deacon emeritus. At First Baptist Church of Clanton, he contributed his leadership as a member of the board of trustees and actively participated in mission trips. At West End Baptist Church, he held the important role of director over church training, nurturing the spiritual growth of the congregation.

Surviving are his loving Wife of 61 years, Geraldine Sorrell; Daughters, Kim (Ralph) Payton, Krisi (Ronnie) Parrish; Grandson, Hunter (Katie) Payton, Brennan (Mady) Payton; Granddaughter, Kayla (Jeremy) Humphries, Lindsey (Ethan) Bullard; Eight Great Grandchildren; A host nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his Father, Jesse Ardell Sorrell; Mother, Johnnie Mae Sorrell; Brother, Carroll Edward Sorrell.

Friends will be received Saturday, May 16, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Clanton First Baptist.

Services will be held Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 2:30 p.m. at Clanton First Baptist with Rev. Justin Nelson & Rev. Gary Miller officiating.

Interment will follow in Martin Memorial Cemetery, Clanton, Alabama.

His life was a testament to dedication—in family, work, faith, and fellowship—and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
