James "Mike" Michael Cooper, 77, of Clanton, Alabama passed away August 24, 2025 at his home. He was born January 13, 1948 in Montgomery, Alabama, son of the late James Monroe Cooper and the late Bertie Thomas Cooper. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Nancy Richter Cooper, numerous cousins, and a host of dear friends and neighbors.
Mike graduated from Lee High School in Montgomery, AL, attended Alexander City Junior College, Livingston University and graduated from Auburn University. His degree in Industrial Design served him throughout his life as he worked in Clanton at Display South and later at Wayne Industries.
Mike was committed to his local community, always willing to help anyone who called upon him. He received the Chilton County Chamber of Commerce 1991 Citizen of the Year Award, mainly for his work with the United Way and helping establish the Chilton Co. Humane Society where he volunteered for years. He loved animals and rescued many over his lifetime.
Other awards he received included the Chilton Auburn Club John McAfee Award, David Housel Auburn Spirit Award and inducted into the Lee High School Hall of Fame.
He was an avid Auburn fan supporting all sports but had a special bond with the Auburn baseball and softball teams. Fondly known as the ‘Helmet Guy’, Mike could be seen and heard leading cheers during games.
A Celebration of Life Memorial will be announced at a later date. If you wish, a donation may be made in Mike’s memory to the First Methodist Church of Clanton or to an animal rescue of your choice.
