James Earl Johnson, 73, of Clanton died Thursday, July 19, 2012 at Chilton Medical Center, Clanton. He was born on Monday, January 16, 1939 in Chilton Co., Alabama, Son of the late Glades Earl Johnson and the late Nora Bell Popwell Johnson. He was a former City of Clanton Chief of Police, Chilton County Tax Assessor and Chilton County Sheriff. Surviving are Wife, Bettie J. Johnson of Clanton, AL; Daughter, Pam Mallery of Clanton, AL; Son, Wade (Angie) Johnson of Clanton, AL; 2 Granddaughters, Jessica Mims of Clanton, AL, Shelby Mallery of Cheyenne, WY; 5 Grandsons, Tyler Mims of Clanton, AL, Josh Johnson of Clanton, AL, Jordan Johnson of Clanton, AL, John Michael Johnson of Clanton, AL, Stephen (Abbie) Mallery of Oxford, GA; 3 Great Grandchildren; 3 Sisters, Anita (Ricky) Smitherman of Clanton, AL; Jackie (Herman) Staggs of Clanton, AL, Burnice (Ray) Jones of Clanton, AL; Brother, David Popwell of Clanton, AL. He was preceded in death by: Glades & Nora Bell Johnson, Parents; James & Estell Popwell, Birth Parents; Carl Popwell, Brother and Ella Mae Wright, Sister. Friends will be received from 9-11, Saturday, July 21, 2012 at Liberty Hill Baptist Church. Services will be held Saturday, July 21, 2012, at 11:00 am. at Liberty Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Kent Dodson officiating. Interment will follow in Liberty Hill Baptist Cem., Clanton, Alabama. Martin Funeral Home directing.
