Obituary

Mary Marjorie (McAfee) Smith was born in Lawley, Alabama. She was the daughter of Robert and Rena McAfee. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Curtis V. Smith, her sisters, Juanita and Joyce, her brother, John and her first grandchild Taylor. She was a graduate of Maplesville High School (1954) and the University of Montevallo (1971). With her degree in Elementary Education, she became a first grade teacher at Isabella High School for 25 years. She was a wife and mother and spent much of her early years in support of her husband during his twenty years in the Alabama House of Representatives while also running a household and raising three sons. She delayed getting her degree until her boys were in school. Once she began teaching, she became one of the most loved first grade teachers in Chilton County. She helped so many children, not only by teaching them to read but by also by looking out for their health and well being too. She was truly called to teach and loved doing it. Her grandchildren were also the love of her life. She and Curtis attended many of their sports activities and events. When she was spending time with them, she enjoyed every moment. Her grandchildren equally enjoyed every moment with her- they knew they were loved. She was an active member of Mulberry Baptist Church for over 60 years, having joined in 1959. She was involved in every aspect of the church - Sunday School and VBS teacher, choir and WMU member and she truly enjoyed her work in the church library, sharing her love of reading. She also did many volunteer activities in her community.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her three sons, Greg (Denise), Vince (Robin), Andy (Pam), her brother, Bob McAfee, her eight grandchildren, Mason, Jordan, Christopher, Clit, Landon, Brooke, Emily, and Zach and all their spouses, twenty-six great-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. She was loved and will be missed by all.

Services will be held at Mulberry Baptist Church on Tuesday, June 30, 2026. Visitation at 10:00 and the celebration of her life to follow at 11:00. Grandsons will serve as Pallbearers.

Burial will follow in Mulberry Baptist Cemetery, Maplesville, Alabama.
