Mary Ann Deramus Yeargan, of Mountain Brook, Alabama, passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2026 at the age of 95. She is survived by the love of her life, Bill (Billy) Yeargan, whom she was married to for 72 years.
Mary Ann was born and raised in Verbena, Alabama, a place she loved dearly. She was the youngest daughter of David "Irby" Deramus and Mamie Northcutt Deramus. She was preceded in death by her older sister and best friend, Millicent Deramus Heflin. She is also survived by her son, Bill (Debbie) Yeargan, and her daughter, Missy (Joel) Gregg. Three grandchildren: Ashley (Bryan) Kitchens, Brette Longoria, and Clark Gregg. Three great grandchildren: Michael Bunn, McKenna Kitchens, and Hannah Grace Longoria. Four nephews: David (Lois) Yeargan, Duke (Emily) Heflin, Irby (Sandra) Heflin, Bill (Lori) Krause, and one niece, Terry Yeargan Jackson.
Mary Ann attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She graduated in 1952 with a degree in education. She later attended the University of Alabama and received her Masters Degree in Elementary Education. She taught school in Chilton County for five years and taught first grade at Brookwood Forest Elementary School in Mountain Brook for twenty five years. She loved watching those little children's eyes light up when they learned something new.
She and her husband had a cabin on Lake Martin for 35 years, and they enjoyed spending time on the lake. Their weekends and summers were often spent at the lake where they loved entertaining family and friends. They had a vegetable garden every summer, so she spent lots of time picking, preparing, freezing, and canning vegetables.
During their lake years, Mary Ann and Bill attended Alex City United Methodist Church and Church in the Pines. After they moved back to Birmingham, they became active members at Mountain Chapel Methodist Church where Mary Ann was a member of the Faith and Joy Circle. They also went on several mission trips to Costa Rica. Mary Ann's grandfather was a Methodist minister, and church was very important to her. She lived her life trying to be a good Christian, viewing her spiritual growth as a lifelong journey, relying on faith, and seeking to reflect God's character in the world.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 4, from 10:00 -11:00AM in the sanctuary at Mountain Chapel Methodist Church: 2541 Rocky Ridge Road, Birmingham, AL 35243. A memorial service will follow at 11AM.
Donations in Mary Ann's memory can be made to Mountain Chapel Methodist Church.
