Melvin Donald Bassett

April 27, 1935 — January 2, 2012

Melvin Donald Bassett left this world peacefully on the morning of January 2, 2012. Don was preceded in death by his father, Guy G. Bassett and his mother, Annie Elizabeth Bassett, both of Roanoke, AL. He is survived by sisters Nancy Holloway (Coley) and Patricia Barck (Gene), daughters Donna Blythe ("Rusty"), Lynne Turner (Jesse), son Stuart (Rita) and grandchildren Brandon, Darci, Hannah, Sarah and Mathew. Don was a graduate of Handley High School in Roanoke and Auburn University. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Radio Navigator. He had a long career with Georgia Power Company and Southern Company Service. He had a love of the outdoors and horseback riding. His love of horseback riding began when his family moved to the country in high school and he and his cousins all got horses and started riding. Later, he rode when participating in histroric Civil War reenactments. Don enjoyed socializing with his friends in the Cullman area, including listening to music and dancing at the VFW and Jack's Truck Stop. Another one of his favorite things to do was to attend family reunions in Dublin, Georgia. Friends and family are invited to a memorial service at George Bassett's house in Dublin, Georgia at 2:00 pm February 4, 2012. The family wishes to thank Amedisys Hospice Services.
