Michael Steven Crew

August 11, 1949 — June 23, 2024

Michael Steven “Steve” Crew, of Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 23, 2024, at the age of 74. Steve was born on August 11, 1949, in Clanton, Alabama, to the late Raybon and Ruth Crew. He is survived by his wife, Mary Exa Walker Crew; his children, Amy Michelle Crew and Scott Christopher Crew (Chrissy); his grandchildren, Felicia Sutton, Jamie Sutton, Nikolis Sutton, Emmett Crew, and Ellory Crew; and his sister, Vicki Crew Strong of Cedartown, Georgia.

Steve grew up and received his education in both Union Springs, Alabama, and Clanton, Alabama, and graduated from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1971. That same year, Steve married the love of his life, Mary Exa Walker Crew on August 14, 1971 and moved to Charlotte to begin his career. Steve and Mary proudly celebrated 50 years of marriage in August of 2021. Together, Steve and Mary had two wonderful children, and in later years, welcomed five beautiful grandchildren.

Steve spent his career as a commercial insurance broker at Marsh and McLennan, retiring in 2011 after 40 years of service. The early days of his retirement were spent providing daily care and supervision to Emmett and Ellory, a task that he cherished every day.

Outside of work, Steve led a life of fellowship and service to the church and his local community. He loved connecting with young people and regularly volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 186, and helped to coach Scott’s youth baseball teams. Steve also enjoyed spending time with young people at church, volunteering with the youth at St. Johns Baptist Church, and later, Cornerstone Baptist Church, both in Charlotte, North Carolina. He also prioritized serving his community for more than 20 years as a volunteer firefighter and EMT at Robinson Volunteer Fire Department.

Steve will leave a legacy of compassion, care, and community to those who he proudly served, guided and mentored. He was passionate about music and travel, and loved playing card games with his beloved “prayer group.” Most of all, Steve loved to be surrounded by his family. A day with his wife, children, and grandchildren was a day well spent in Steve’s eyes. Steve was never more than a phone call away and would drop whatever he was doing to help his family and loved ones if the need arose.

Steve’s family would like to invite all who knew and loved him to his visitation service on June 29, 2024, from 10:30 am to 11:00 am at Martin Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral service celebrating Steve’s life will be held on June 29, 2024 from 11:00 am. Steve will be laid to rest in Martin Memorial Cemetery in Clanton, Alabama.
