Royal Gilbert Mulhorn, age 87, passed away peacefully Wednesday afternoon after a brief illness, the seventh of September 2022. He was born on June 17, 1935, in Scottsdale, Pennsylvania, to the late John Royal and Francis Irene Mulhorn. Affectionately known as “Uncle Sonny” to his extended family in western Pennsylvania, Roy was a loving, cherished, and devoted husband, father, brother, and son.
After high school, Roy completed his undergraduate studies at Waynesburg College in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, and later earned his Master of Business degree from the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to cheering on the Pitt Panthers, he was an avid Steelers fan. Roy held many managerial positions with Acme Markets Corporation and was a successful proprietor of the Village Deli in Beckett, New Jersey.
A long time faithful member of the United Methodist Church, he always put his faith in God first and, through his service to the Emmaus community, he took great pleasure in sponsoring dozens of pilgrims on their faith walks. Through his generous heart and spirit, Roy selflessly and silently saw and filled both the unspoken and spoken needs of others. His life and actions truly made him a valuable role model for young Christian men.
An avid and life long fan of everything electronic, Roy has always enjoyed searching for the latest and greatest in tech and even built a working computer from scratch. In addition to his interests in electronics, Roy has filled his retirement years with world travel, exploring new highways in his convertible Porsche, and life on the water.
Preceded in death by his parents, a half-brother, John, and his first wife of over 50 years, Willetta (Love), Roy is survived by his wife Shirley (Glass); his brother Ronald Mulhorn (Yvonne); his children Constance McAllister (Joseph), Karen Smith, and John Mulhorn (Tatiana); his step-daughter Alicia Dobbs; his grandchildren Jordan McAllister, Erica Mulhorn, Alexandra Hickman (Derek), Joseph McAllister (Anna), Jacqueline Ellis (Joseph), Samantha Smith, Sydney Smith, Chloe Mulhorn, John Riley Mulhorn, and Ryann Mulhorn; and his great granddaughter Isabella Love Ellis.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Roy’s memory may be made to the Clanton First United Methodist Church.
