Sarah Walton Hickman was born to Loy Anderson Hickman and Daisy Ruth Coker Hickman on May 11, 1930 in Ashland, Clay County, Alabama. After the early death of her mother, she and her brother Glenn were raised by their grandmother Mrs. Ollie B. Lynch Coker. She was Salutatorian of her Clay County High School graduating class of 1948 and graduated from Alabama College, in Montevallo, with her bachelor’s degree in Vocational Home Economics in 1951. She then began her career with the Auburn University, Alabama Cooperative Extension Service where she worked as Extension agent concentrating on adult programs and 4H youth programs in Fayette and Chilton counties. She retired as Extension Agent in 1990 and would later receive inclusion on the Alabama 4H Wall of Fame in 2009.
She married Charles Roscoe McDowell in 1953 and settled in Clanton, Alabama to raise their son. She was an avid reader, loved working with youth, gardening, travel and flowers of all kinds.
She is pre deceased by her parents, her husband Charles Roscoe McDowell, her grandmother Ollie Belle Lynch Coker, and brother Glenn L. Hickman.
She is survived by her son Charles Steve McDowell, her sister-in-law Mary Bobo Hickman and nieces JoAnn McDowell Saucier, Jan Hickman, Emily Hickman Handley and Beth Hickman Cox.
The family wishes to thank caregivers for their love, compassion, and friendship during her illness and death. We will forever be grateful.
